Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders 2013 Specialists
- Updated: August 13, 2013
Our summer tour of FBS schools looks at the specialists for the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders.
“Health could be a major factor in determining MTSU’s placekicker for a second straight season. Redshirt freshman Cody Clark is the front-runner for the position 10 days into preseason camp, as true freshman signee Canon Rooker has been hampered by a hip flexor. A year ago, Clark suffered the same injury in camp and lost out to senior transfer Carlos Lopez for placekicking duties. ‘I think (injuries) are typical for young kickers coming out of high school, where they don’t realize all that you have to do,’ MTSU head coach Rick Stockstill said. ‘So if we had to play tonight or tomorrow, Cody would be our kicker. We had a brand new kicker last year, and he was good. Whoever we send out this year, I have confidence they’ll be good too’.”
Kicker: Cody Clark, freshman (Watkinsville, GA / North Oconee HS)
2012: Took a redshirt year after appearing in one game (McNeese).
“During the offseason. I’ve just been working on becoming a more explosive athlete. Getting stronger and quicker. Kicking wise I’ve been improving my technique and working with former UT kicker/kicking coach James Wilhoit. For the season my goals are to win the vacant kicking job, be perfect inside 40 yards, and help my team win a conference championship & reach a bowl game.
Kicker: Canon Rooker, freshman (Richmond Hill, GA / Richmond Hill S)
Competing against Clark for the starting kicker position.
“Offseason: I have been working constantly on my height and consistency with my field goals. I have also worked on directional kick offs and getting my height and distance up. I have also been lifting weights and running like crazy to be in the shape needed to play college football.
Upcoming season: For the summer my goal was to come into MTSU and get acclimated and comfortable with my surroundings, field and college workouts. For the upcoming season I hope to be able to compete and win the starting position and contribute to our success as a team and quickly as I can.”
Punter: Josh Davis, senior (Dayton, TN / Rhea County HS)
2012: Played in all 12 games as the primary punter … Averaged 40.2 yards on 42 punts with 14 being placed inside the 20-yard line on the season … Had six punts go 50 or more yards
“I’ve been working out with the team this summer and currently attending the Kohls kicking elite kicking camp at UW Whitewater.. Working to improve technique and compete against the nations best in preparation for this season.”
Punter: Zachary Lopez, junior (Fayetteville, GA / Sandy Creek)
2012: Played in his first collegiate game against North Texas and punted four times for a 37.2-yard average … Had a long of 53 yards and placed two of his four punts inside the 20-yard line
Punter: Michael Kee, sophomore (Naples, FL / Naples HS)
“Since last season has ended I have been kicking as much as possible working on form and mechanics and if I can’t kick one day then I try and do soething that will benefit me such as stretch extra or leg swings. We have been on a strict weight and conditioning program since January and it will not end until we get to camp on august 1st. Some of my goals were to build my leg and put on some weight because I was light last season. I have attained those goals but the training and getting better does not stop.”
Long snapper: Blaine Sidders, sophomore (Delafield, WI / Kettle Moraine HS)
2012: Played in all 12 games … Served as the Raiders’ snapper on field goals and PATs … Was in for a total of 107 snaps.
“I have been working out with the team since June and been working on my snapping with the rest of the special teams. I’m currently on my way to attend the Kohl’s national elite camp with my punter Josh Davis. As for goals for the season, it would be to have no bad snaps on punts or field goals and help MTSU get back to bowl game anyway I can.”
Long snapper: Greg Rein, junior (New Port Richey, FL / Clearwater Central Catholic HS / Springfield College)
High School: Lettered in football and wrestling
Long snapper: William Eads, freshman (Hoover, AL / Hoover HS)
High School: A three-year letterman in football at Hoover High School … Ranked as the number one long snapper in Alabama and top 10 nationally
